Our Favourite Spots to Sit, Soak Up the Sun, and Breathe

The Front Porch: Our Sunrise Sanctuary

Hello dear friends. My oh my, aren’t the mornings just glorious these days? Every morning, without fail, my old man and I drag our weathered wooden chairs onto the front porch, which faces due east. We sit ourselves down, often huddled in woolen blankets if the season calls for it, and we welcome the new day.

I usually sit, my toes tapping impatiently on the worn floorboards, waiting for the first strains of sunlight to peek over the horizon. And when that sunlight breaks free and spills its golden light across our quaint farmhouse, it’s a sight that never ceases to make my heart leap.

The Garden: Where Growth and Gratitude Meet

After the gentle warmth of the rising sun starts to kick off the day, it’s time for some quiet pottering around the garden. Garden, by the way, is a rather grand name for the motley congregation of pots, tubs, and old tin cans that I’ve collected over the years. Yet, I couldn’t be prouder of our little jumble of greenery.

There’s something about the feeling of rich soil under your fingers, isn’t there? Watching the first sprouts push through the soil or seeing the stubborn persistence of a long-wished-for blossom. It’s that simple, peaceful joy that often marks the highlight of my day. Now Bandit, our Kelpie, he rather enjoys this time too—though his interest lies more in chasing bugs than in the beauty of nature’s cycle.

The Chicken Coop: A Flock of Feathers and Fun

One of the purest delights we have is visiting our brood of chickens. There’s no place quite as bustling with life and energy than our…well, let’s call it the ‘Chicken Palace.’ Nestled amidst the old gum trees, it’s home to our hens who always greet us cheerfully, clucking away as if telling us about their dreams they had the night before.

Their daily scramble for the feed and their bickering conversations are a spectacle that never fails to pull laughter from our bellies. It’s unbelievable how much joy these little feathered dames can bring. Maybe it’s the rustle of feathers, the rhythmic clucking, or just the simplicity of their existence that can put us in a good mood for the rest of the day.

The Pig Pens: Feeding Our Porcine Pals

Moving on to our nine portly porkers. Now, the pig enclosure is rarely quiet. With snouts wiggling and grunts echoing off the fence, it’s indeed a lively place. The honking greetings that welcome us every morning, well, they certainly would make you feel like a superstar.

Regrettably, Stevie Nicks – our beloved Groodle – has developed a complicated relationship with the pigs; to be honest, the whole sight is rather comical. The grand chase that usually takes place around the pigpen has now become a customary routine—a specter of entertainment for us and our granddaughters during their visits.

The Gully: Our Sunset Retreat

As the day draws to a close, it’s time for us to wind down. The place we often find ourselves is down by the gully at the edge of our property. It’s a unique place where the wild bushland respectfully nudges against our managed farmyard.

We sip on our mugs of hot tea and watch the sun dip low, painting the sky with an astounding collage of orange and pink hues. On windless days, the pond goes glassy as a mirror, un-ruffled and calmly reflecting the riotous sunset, as if holding onto the day’s beauty a little longer. The evening birdsong that echoes from the other side of the gully surely does make this scenery feel like a little slice of heaven.

Living close to nature has its rhythm, its comforts, and its simple language of silence and serenity. Whether it’s sitting, soaking in the sun, or simply breathing, it’s these little moments that make our life full of meaning. Until next time, dear friend, remember to pause, appreciate, and enjoy the simplicity that life offers us each day.
